Being the best cousin EVAH - I noticed that the baby was stirring, made a bottle and then fed him, changed his diaper and put him back to bed before his mama had noticed...but alas, after all of that - I just couldn't manage to put myself back to bed.
So, I did what any self respecting 20 something would do, and bummed around on the internet for a little while...finally exhausting possible forms of procrastination, I decided it would be nice of me to make a good breakfast.
SO - I dug around the fridge and freezer, scoping out my options.
Not a whole lot of anything struck me with inspiration, until I saw a frozen pie crust..
Ah HA! I thought!
I shall make a quiche! Because who doesn't love homemade quiche?!
(Please note the over achiever gene SHINING through. Except when it comes to pie crust. I missed getting my mothers pie crust making gene. I know, it makes me cry too. And even if my pastry didn't taste like garbage, that's a little too over achievery, even for ME - especially before 9am.)
So I grabbed some eggs, some milk, some onions, broccoli and cheese and started throwing together a quiche.
While I was doing this, my cousin called from Boston to chat because she had seen activity on my facebook (CREEPER!) and knew I was awake.
She asked what I was doing up so early and so I told her that I was making a quiche.
She told me that I was crazy, and yadda yadda yadda - because it wasn't even 9am on a Saturday and I was in the kitchen, making a quiche. From (almost) scratch.
Then she proceeded to tell me how normal people my age who weren't working and had no responsibilities were probably not huge dorks and making homemade quiche for fun before 9am.

I laughed and said that I liked cooking, and wanted to have a nice breakfast and I couldn't sleep anyways so she could just stop being a big meanie face or I would never make her quiche again.
Now THAT shut her up pretty quick. What can I say? I make a mean quiche.
Fast forward to the quiche being in the oven. Almost ready. I had a lovely breakfast ready almost ready to go, I'd cut up some fruit when suddenly, I realised what I was missing.
Coffee.
Generally, adults have COFFEE with breakfast.
My cousin for one had coffee with breakfast - you know, being an ADULT and all.
Which is great, except that I...don't. (Does that mean that I can declare myself a non-adult?!)
Confession time: Before this point in my life on that rainy October morning - I had NEVER made coffee.
I had no idea what I was doing as I stared blankly at the coffee machine.
Not wanting to wake my cousin, I called the other one in Boston that I had just been chatting with, and explained my situation to her.
I didn't think I was asking much - I simply needed her to tell me how to make coffee, give me some direction - I'm not THAT much of an idiot.
So, she walked me through the steps.
Told me how much water to put in, where to turn the machine on and how many scoops of coffee grounds to put in (with a gentle reminder that I needed to put in a filter - thanks, tips)
I could hear a little hint of amusement in her voice and questioned this - it's not like it's the easiest thing in the world - making coffee, that is.
(It's not MY fault that I'm not addicted to caffeine. Wait. Maybe it is. Either way. Isn't that a GOOD thing? Hrm.)
ANYWAY.

ANYWAY.
She just laughed and said: Well, no offense or anything...but don't you think that it's kind of funny that you can make a quiche from scratch without evening THINKING about it, but you need someone to hold your hand to make COFFEE?
Seems that anything everyone seems to be able to do - I can't quite figure out.
And the things that most find daunting? Yeah - no worries, I've got it covered.
And that folks, IS THE STORY OF MY LIFE.
The quiche sounds fantastic. I can't make coffee either :)
ReplyDelete@ Danna and Kirk - Let me know if you want the recipe! It's actually REALLY easy and REALLY good! ..Although I have to warn you that I'm the WORST for following recipes..I'll sometimes use a recipe for a base..and then usually just do whatever I want..haha! Although I gave the recipe to some family friends and they used it word for word and it still was REALLY good! Glad to know I'm not the only one who is clueless when it comes to coffee..haha! :)
ReplyDeleteI featured you on my blog today:

What would be the fun in being normal anyway? I enjoyed your post! :)
ReplyDeleteI *heart* quiche!
ReplyDeleteFun post! I am so sad you don't know how to make coffee...that needs to change ASAP! Coffee is THE part of my day....
For a laugh, I just KNEW You were going to say you used breast milk in the quiche and in your coffee....having a baby around and all, it made sense.
P.S. Thanks for the sweet comments on my photo shoot pics!
I have never had quiche. Ever. I"m from wisconsin, does that count? I've seen it many places just never had it.
ReplyDeleteI used to drink coffee back in the day. When I was a single parent and met my husband I at least had a coffee pot from back in the day of living with the man who helped make the baby he didn't stay around for...so I got it out and was like..shoot. I've never really made coffee, he always did it.
still to this day, he'll make an occasional face about it..either its too weak or way too strong. Sometimes I think I"m being crafty and mix two different flavors together and he about has a bird cause he likes certain coffees certain ways..sigh.. leave it to me to be creative.
I could not live one day without coffee. My coffee maker is my favorite possession. I just got it for Christmas it is amazing!
ReplyDelete@Summer Jo - Thank you so much! Such a good post..I was reading your blog on my phone and it was really cute...but am going to go back now and read some more! :)
ReplyDelete@LaughWithUs - Ha - who needs normal! ;) Thanks!
@Amanda - I'm not sure if you know who I am..I've changed blogs yet again..but have always loved yours since that day you found mine! :)
@I'llhavetosayIloveyouinasong - Haha - I would TOTALLY try to be creative with coffee too..luckily anyone who knows me knows me knows I don't do coffee and thus am hopeless in that respect in the kitchen!
@Rachel - I actually did drink coffee more often than I do here (which is basically nothing here - so it's not hard to do!) while I was in Europe..and I LOVED it..it was the best..but it was also very very different and absolutely nothing like North American coffee..I find coffee here bitter and generally eck...whereas the RIDICULOUSLY expensive coffee my boss bought? Was amazing. Alas, I'm not a bazillionaire..LOL!
